A team at Santa Clara University has developed an AI chatbot, the AI Provenance Assistant, designed to simplify the complex process of tracking and recovering art stolen by the Nazis during World War II. Over 600,000 works of art, primarily owned by Jewish
individuals, were looted during this period, and approximately one-fifth of these pieces remain unreturned. The chatbot aims to make it easier for individuals to search archives of stolen art by allowing ordinary language queries, rather than requiring specific keywords or navigating complex menus. Michael Santoro, a business school professor leading the team, states that the tool helps make connections that would otherwise require extensive manual research by seasoned experts. Currently, the AI Provenance Assistant scrapes records from one database, but plans are in place to expand its capabilities to include more databases and eventually assist in repatriating African, Asian, and pre-Columbian art.
