What's Happening?
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has released its Renewable Energy Statistics 2026, revealing a significant 9.8% growth in renewable electricity generation in 2024. This growth outpaces
the 1.4% increase in non-renewable energy sources during the same period. Renewables accounted for 31.7% of global electricity generation in 2024, totaling 9836 terawatt hours (TWh). The report aligns with the incoming COP31 Presidency of Türkiye's announcement of a global electrification target of 35% of final energy demand by 2035. This target requires renewables to increase their share in global electricity generation to 78% by 2035, approximately 2.5 times the current level. IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera emphasized the need for a rapid shift from fossil fuels to clean electricity, supported by available technologies and compelling economics.
Why It's Important?
The report underscores the accelerating global transition towards renewable energy, driven by economic, environmental, and security considerations. The rapid growth in renewable energy generation is crucial for meeting international climate goals and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, which are subject to price volatility and environmental concerns. The shift to renewables is seen as a way to enhance energy security, resilience, and competitiveness. However, the report also highlights the need for significant support for vulnerable nations to ensure an inclusive transition. The data serves as a powerful indicator of the irreversible global shift towards clean energy, as recognized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
What's Next?
The global energy landscape is expected to continue evolving with increased investments in renewable technologies and infrastructure. Countries will need to implement policies and frameworks to support the rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity. The focus will be on achieving the ambitious electrification targets set for 2035, which will require coordinated efforts from governments, industries, and international organizations. The delivery of climate finance pledges will be essential to support developing nations in their transition to renewable energy. As the world moves towards a low-carbon future, the role of renewable energy in driving economic growth and sustainability will become increasingly prominent.
