Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia is relocating its recreational beach and parking facilities approximately 2.5 miles north to a more stable location. This decision follows a severe storm in 2015 that flooded and destroyed the previous
parking lot, highlighting the challenges of maintaining infrastructure on a dynamic barrier island. Assateague Island, where the refuge is located, is gradually moving towards the mainland at an estimated rate of 10 to 13 feet annually, a process accelerated by major storms. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has spent over $15 million on storm recovery at the refuge since 2003, with annual maintenance costs reaching up to $400,000. The new site aims to maintain existing parking capacity while reducing repeated storm-repair expenses. Construction began in 2025, with parking material installed in four of five planned lots and road-base material laid along approximately one mile of the 2.25-mile road by 2026. The existing beach will remain open during construction, with the new recreational beach potentially opening in spring 2027.
