What's Happening?
Canada has announced a landmark trade agreement with China, which significantly alters its economic and diplomatic approach. The deal, revealed during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to Beijing, will see a substantial reduction in tariffs
on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) entering Canada. Specifically, up to 49,000 Chinese-made EVs will be allowed into the Canadian market annually at a reduced tariff rate of 6.1%, down from the previous 100% duty. This change is intended to facilitate the entry of affordable EVs, with many expected to be priced under $35,000 CAD by 2030. In exchange, China will lower tariffs on Canadian canola seed from 84% to approximately 15% by March 1, and remove anti-discrimination tariffs on canola meal, lobsters, peas, and crabs by the end of the year. This agreement is projected to create nearly $3 billion in new export opportunities for Canadian farmers and seafood producers.
