What's Happening?
Avikus, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai specializing in autonomous navigation, has signed a significant agreement with HMM, South Korea's leading national carrier. The contract involves supplying Avikus's AI-based
autonomous navigation solution, HiNAS Control, to 40 vessels. This deal marks the largest single supply contract for autonomous navigation solutions to date, making Avikus the first company to surpass 100 cumulative units of autonomous solutions supplied to large-scale commercial vessels. HiNAS Control is a 'Level 2' autonomous system that actively controls vessels, setting optimal routes and navigating without crew intervention.
Why It's Important?
This contract is a major milestone in the maritime industry, highlighting the growing adoption of autonomous navigation technologies. The use of AI-based systems like HiNAS Control can significantly enhance maritime safety by preventing accidents through real-time situational awareness. Additionally, these systems offer economic benefits by optimizing fuel efficiency and reducing operational costs. The partnership between Avikus, HMM, and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering aims to strengthen industrial competitiveness and establish global standards in the shipping market, addressing challenges such as the global shortage of seafarers.
