What's Happening?
Cathy Rychalsky has been appointed as the new executive director of the Workforce Board Lehigh Valley, succeeding the late Nancy Dischinat. Rychalsky brings extensive experience in workforce development, having previously worked with the Lancaster County
Workforce Development Board. Her focus is on aligning training programs with new skill sets and investing in apprenticeship programs to provide job seekers with opportunities to earn while they learn. Rychalsky emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact of artificial intelligence on job markets and ensuring that it does not replace human roles entirely. She aims to build on the strong foundation laid by her predecessor and address the challenges posed by a retiring workforce and the need for skilled workers.
Why It's Important?
Rychalsky's leadership comes at a crucial time as the Lehigh Valley anticipates significant job growth by 2050. Her initiatives could play a vital role in preparing the workforce for future demands, particularly in industries like manufacturing and technology. By focusing on apprenticeships and skill development, Rychalsky aims to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers, potentially reducing unemployment and underemployment in the region. Her approach to integrating artificial intelligence into workforce strategies could also set a precedent for other regions facing similar technological shifts. The success of these programs could lead to a more resilient and adaptable workforce, benefiting both individuals and the local economy.
What's Next?
Rychalsky plans to continue developing partnerships with industry, education, and government to promote careers in advanced manufacturing and other sectors. She will focus on ensuring that training programs are relevant and aligned with the needs of the community. As the region prepares for a demographic shift with many baby boomers retiring, Rychalsky's efforts to create a pipeline of skilled workers will be critical. The Workforce Board and CareerLink will work on strategies to fill the anticipated job vacancies and support economic growth in the Lehigh Valley.
