What's Happening?
The University of Findlay is gearing up for its 21st annual Helping Hands Food Drive, with the official collection day scheduled for Wednesday, November 4. This long-standing community tradition aims to combat food insecurity in Hancock County by bringing
together university students, employees, local schools, businesses, and community members. Donations of nonperishable food items and monetary contributions will be accepted at the University’s Watterson Center and various collection points across Findlay, including local Kroger and Walmart stores, and Brinkman’s. Most-needed items include peanut butter, canned fruit, canned soup, bottled juice, and cereal. All collected donations will benefit CHOPIN Hall, a local nonprofit that distributes food to individuals and families in the community. The drive also features a 'Can-struction' competition and the Hancock Area Schools Golden Can Competition to engage participants.
Why It's Important?
This annual food drive is crucial for addressing local food insecurity in Hancock County, providing essential support to CHOPIN Hall, which serves vulnerable individuals and families. The initiative demonstrates the significant impact of collaborative community action, having collected over 2.3 million pounds of food since its inception in 2005. For the University of Findlay, it reinforces its commitment to community engagement and social responsibility, fostering a sense of civic duty among its students and staff. The involvement of local schools and businesses creates a broad network of support, strengthening community bonds and raising awareness about the persistent issue of hunger. Such localized efforts are vital in supplementing larger-scale hunger relief programs and ensuring that immediate needs within specific communities are met.
What's Next?
Following the collection day on November 4, all donations will be inspected, sorted, and delivered to CHOPIN Hall on Thursday, November 5, with transportation provided by Garner Trucking. An awards ceremony will follow, recognizing contributors and participants in the various competitions, and announcing the total weight of food collected. The success of this year's drive will directly impact CHOPIN Hall's ability to provide food assistance to Hancock County residents in the coming months. The University of Findlay will likely continue to host this annual event, building on its tradition and expanding its reach within the community. The ongoing engagement through competitions like 'Can-struction' and the Golden Can Competition will continue to foster participation and awareness among younger generations.
