What's Happening?
NASA is funding a new project in collaboration with the University of Iowa and local water facilities to develop a forecasting tool for predicting nitrate concentrations in Iowa's groundwater and surface water. Led by associate engineering professor Jesus
Gomez-Velez, the project aims to combine satellite images with water quality measurements to create a system that can anticipate when nitrate levels might reach dangerous levels. This tool is expected to help water treatment plants plan more effectively, potentially reducing the need for nitrate removal facilities and improving public health outcomes. The project involves partnerships with Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Des Moines Water Works.
