What's Happening?
Japan's Environment Ministry announced a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for fiscal year 2024, marking a record low of approximately 1,046 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. This represents a 1.9% decrease from the previous year.
The decline is attributed to increased utilization of renewable and nuclear energy sources, alongside a reduction in manufacturing output. Net emissions, accounting for absorptions by forests and other carbon sinks, also fell by 1.9% to about 994 million tons, dipping below 1 billion tons for the first time since fiscal 2013. The Japanese government is targeting a 46% reduction in emissions by fiscal 2030 from the 2013 levels, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.
