What's Happening?
Hawaii has launched the Kalaeloa Hybrid Reef Project, a living breakwater designed to protect coastal roads from rising sea levels and erosion. Governor Josh Green lauded the initiative as a forward-thinking partnership combining science, innovation,
and environmental stewardship. The project involves the deployment of 60 engineered, porous concrete reef-mimicking structures that dissipate wave energy while allowing water flow. These structures are designed to support the recruitment and growth of native corals, with specially developed biomaterials to repel algae and accelerate coral growth, aiming to create a self-sustaining ecosystem over time. Funded by DARPA and the State’s Green Fee program, the project is a collaborative effort involving the University of Hawaii, Makai Engineering, Kuleana Coral Restoration, and other partners. The first year of monitoring and maintenance is covered by the Green Fee program, which supports conservation and environmental initiatives.
