The China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), in collaboration with Algerian state-owned partners, has completed Africa's first heavy-haul desert railway. This project, the largest single infrastructure build by a Chinese firm in Algeria, was completed three
months ahead of schedule despite challenging desert conditions. The railway spans over 580 kilometers and is designed to handle 32.5-tonne axle-load freight trains and passenger services traveling up to 160 kilometers per hour. It features advanced technology, including Algeria's first CPG500 track-laying machine and automated welding technology, which significantly boosted construction efficiency. The railway is a strategic link for mining and economic development, particularly aimed at unlocking the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit, one of the world's largest iron reserves.
