What's Happening?
NASA is pursuing federal authorization for a significant shoreline restoration project on Wallops Island, aimed at safeguarding government and commercial spaceflight facilities from storm damage and erosion. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Norfolk District
is currently reviewing NASA's application for permits under the Clean Water Act and Rivers and Harbors Act. The project involves restoring approximately three miles of Atlantic Ocean shoreline at the Wallops Flight Facility in Accomack County. NASA plans to dredge up to 2.5 million cubic yards of sand from an offshore shoal, which will be transported via a temporary hydraulic pipeline to the shoreline. Additionally, NASA intends to construct up to four new breakwaters to reduce wave energy and maintain the restored beach. The project is designed to protect facilities operated by NASA, the U.S. Navy, and the Virginia Spaceport Authority's Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport.
