What's Happening?
The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) has initiated a project in Nigeria in collaboration with the Nigerian Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI). This project aims to investigate the role and impact of
agriculture on women with disabilities in Africa. A stakeholder engagement session was recently held in Southwest Nigeria, where insights were gathered from women with disabilities, agricultural experts, and community leaders. The project seeks to identify challenges and opportunities, and make policy recommendations to enhance the participation and socio-economic empowerment of African women with disabilities. The six-month scoping study will generate evidence to inform advocacy efforts, policy formulation, and inclusive agricultural programs tailored to the needs of women with disabilities.
Why It's Important?
This research is crucial for enhancing the socio-economic empowerment of women with disabilities in Africa by developing an understanding of inclusive agricultural practices. According to Mr. Kola Jayeoba, Program Manager at AWWDI, the research is about visibility, dignity, and justice, aiming to document the realities of women with disabilities in agriculture. The findings are expected to inform policies and programs that address their needs and unlock their full potential. Inclusive agricultural practices are essential for building a resilient and sustainable food system in Africa, contributing to equity and climate resilience. The project is part of the Africa-Australia Partnership for Climate Responsive Agriculture initiative, which supports locally led agricultural development.
What's Next?
The project will continue to gather data and insights over the next six months, with the aim of generating evidence to inform advocacy efforts and policy formulation. The findings are expected to influence agricultural programs not only in Nigeria but across Africa, ensuring that women with disabilities are actively included in future policies and initiatives. The initiative strives to enhance the climate resilience of farming communities and strengthen women’s participation in agricultural research, building lasting connections between African and Australian researchers.
Beyond the Headlines
This project highlights the intersection of disability rights and agricultural development, emphasizing the need for inclusive practices that consider the unique challenges faced by women with disabilities. It underscores the importance of visibility and justice in research, aiming to create a more equitable agricultural sector. The collaboration between African and Australian researchers represents a significant step towards sustainable and inclusive development, fostering international partnerships and knowledge exchange.
