Nearly two-thirds of Harvard University faculty members believe artificial intelligence has had a negative impact on their courses, according to a survey conducted by The Harvard Crimson. This figure represents an increase from 42% last year. The survey,
which included over 460 professors in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, also revealed that while most professors now have explicit policies regarding AI use in their classrooms (only 3.5% lack such policies), only 4% entirely permit AI use, a decrease from 8% last year. Conversely, about a quarter of professors now prohibit all AI use, up from 20%. Despite these policies, nearly nine in ten faculty members reported receiving student work they suspected was AI-generated, yet only 64% felt confident in their ability to distinguish between AI-created and student-created content. Referrals of unauthorized AI use to the honor council remained low, increasing only slightly from 10% to 12%.
