What's Happening?
A new discussion paper has been released to gather input on the inclusion of First Nations peoples in the agriculture sector. This initiative follows feedback collected in 2024 and aims to address key areas such as representation, use of the Indigenous
Estate, Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, business support, research collaboration, and government coordination. The consultation period is open for six weeks, ending on December 12, and invites all Australians involved or interested in First Nations participation in agriculture, fisheries, and forestry to contribute. The feedback will help shape a national statement supporting Indigenous economic inclusion, as agreed upon at the Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting in 2024.
Why It's Important?
The consultation is crucial for enhancing the economic inclusion of First Nations peoples in the agriculture sector, which has historically been underrepresented. By addressing barriers and opportunities, the initiative aims to foster greater participation and representation, potentially leading to more equitable economic outcomes. This effort could benefit Indigenous communities by providing them with more control over their cultural and intellectual property and improving collaboration with government and industry stakeholders. The initiative also reflects a broader commitment to reconciliation and economic empowerment of First Nations peoples.
What's Next?
The feedback collected during the consultation will be used to develop a joint National Statement on First Nations in Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry. This statement will guide future policies and initiatives aimed at increasing Indigenous participation and representation in these sectors. Stakeholders, including government departments and Indigenous organizations, will likely continue to collaborate to ensure the statement reflects the needs and aspirations of First Nations communities. The outcome of this consultation could influence future government policies and industry practices.
