Idaho Falls Power has inaugurated a new 17.5-MW natural gas-fired peaking generation plant, marking a significant milestone in its 125-year history. The $36 million project was approved by the Idaho Falls City Council in early 2024 and executed with the help
of ESI, a construction company based in Meridian, Idaho. The new facility is designed to provide electricity during peak demand periods, such as the hottest summer days and coldest winter nights, thereby reducing the utility's reliance on external market purchases. This move is part of Idaho Falls Power's ongoing commitment to innovation, fiscal responsibility, and maintaining low electricity rates. The utility, which operates four hydroelectric dams along the Snake River, provides about one-third of the city's energy needs. The new plant also features generators capable of running on hydrogen fuel, aligning with future energy sustainability goals.
