A study published in Water Research has revealed the presence of microplastic particles in deep-sea snails and mussels from hydrothermal vents in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Researchers found that 11 out of 12 sampled animals contained microplastics,
highlighting the pervasive impact of human activities on remote marine ecosystems. The study compared contamination levels between the two oceans, noting that the Indian Ocean specimens had significantly higher microplastic concentrations. This disparity is attributed to the Indian Ocean's substantial plastic discharges and regional monsoons that facilitate pollutant transport.
