What's Happening?
Jammu and Kashmir is developing a comprehensive roadmap to enhance the commercial cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) in the region. The initiative, led by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo,
aims to increase the current annual revenue from Rs 12 crore to its potential of nearly Rs 10,000 crore nationally and about Rs 2 lakh crore globally. The plan involves collaboration between the Forest and Agriculture Production Departments and the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine. The strategy focuses on inter-departmental coordination, propagation of planting material, and training for farmers. The Agriculture Production Department will identify commercially viable species and develop cultivation practices, while research institutions will provide technical expertise and support knowledge dissemination.
Why It's Important?
The initiative is significant as it seeks to unlock the economic potential of Jammu and Kashmir's MAP sector, which is currently underutilized. By focusing on commercial cultivation, the region aims to enhance farmers' incomes and contribute significantly to the local and national economy. The project also emphasizes sustainable practices and value addition, which could lead to increased market integration and better livelihoods for farmers. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other regions with similar agricultural potential, promoting economic growth and sustainability.
What's Next?
The next steps involve the implementation of the roadmap with clearly defined roles for the involved departments. The Forest Department will focus on propagation and training, while the Agriculture Production Department will work on species identification and market integration. Research institutions will establish Centers of Excellence and develop germplasm banks. The initiative will also require amendments to existing policies to encourage farmer participation and improve market linkages. The long-term goal is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that provides attractive returns for farmers.
