What's Happening?
Electra is pioneering a new method to produce iron using renewable electricity, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of data centers. Traditional steel production, which heavily relies on coal-fueled blast furnaces, contributes significantly to global
greenhouse gas emissions. Electra's process, known as electrowinning, uses electricity to extract iron from ore at much lower temperatures, avoiding the high heat and fossil fuels associated with conventional methods. The company plans to open a demonstration plant in Jefferson County, Colorado, by mid-2026, with a production capacity of 500 metric tonnes of iron annually. This initiative is supported by US$50 million from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, US$186 million in private investment, and an US$8 million tax credit from the Colorado Energy Office.
