What's Happening?
Enhertu (trastuzumab deruxtecan), a HER2-directed antibody drug conjugate (ADC) developed by Daiichi Sankyo and AstraZeneca, has been awarded the 2026 International Prix Galien Award for Best Biotechnology Product. This marks the second Prix Galien award for Enhertu,
following its receipt of the Prix Galien USA Award in 2024. The International Prix Galien, often considered the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in biopharmaceutical research, recognizes outstanding biomedical and medical technology product achievements that improve human health. Enhertu was selected from six nominees by an international committee. Since its initial U.S. approval in 2019, Enhertu has significantly impacted the treatment and classification of metastatic breast cancer by establishing HER2 low and HER2 ultralow breast cancer as distinct clinical segments, and has shown practice-changing results across various HER2-positive cancers.
Why It's Important?
This award underscores Enhertu's profound impact on cancer treatment in the U.S. and globally, particularly for patients with HER2-positive, HER2-low, and HER2-ultralow breast cancer, as well as HER2-mutant non-small cell lung cancer and HER2-positive solid tumors. For U.S. patients, Enhertu represents a critical advancement, offering new hope and improved outcomes in previously challenging cancer types. The recognition highlights the success of innovative biotechnology in developing targeted therapies that redefine standards of care. This achievement also reinforces the U.S.'s leadership in biopharmaceutical research and development, attracting further investment and talent to the sector. The establishment of new cancer classifications, such as HER2 low and ultralow, driven by Enhertu's efficacy, will continue to shape diagnostic and treatment paradigms in oncology, benefiting countless patients and influencing future drug development strategies.
What's Next?
Enhertu is currently approved in numerous countries/regions worldwide for various HER2-positive cancers, and its comprehensive global clinical development program continues to evaluate its efficacy and safety as a monotherapy or in combination with other cancer medicines. The ongoing research aims to further expand its indications and optimize its use across multiple HER2-targetable cancers. This award will likely enhance Enhertu's profile within the medical community and among patients, potentially increasing its adoption as a standard treatment option where indicated. The success of Enhertu also sets a high bar for future biotechnology products, encouraging continued innovation in targeted cancer therapies and antibody drug conjugates. The collaboration between Daiichi Sankyo and AstraZeneca will likely continue to explore new applications and combinations for Enhertu, further solidifying its role in oncology.
Beyond the Headlines
The success of Enhertu signifies a broader trend in oncology towards highly targeted therapies that leverage a deeper understanding of cancer biology. This shift moves beyond traditional chemotherapy to more precise treatments that minimize collateral damage to healthy cells. The concept of 'HER2 low' and 'HER2 ultralow' classifications, pioneered by Enhertu, illustrates how drug development can lead to a re-categorization of diseases, opening new avenues for diagnosis and treatment. This has ethical implications for patient stratification and access to specialized therapies. Furthermore, the award highlights the power of international pharmaceutical collaborations in accelerating drug discovery and global access to innovative medicines. The ongoing development of ADCs, exemplified by Enhertu, represents a significant technological leap in cancer therapy, promising a new generation of highly effective and targeted treatments.
