The Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation (DESC), the workforce agency for the City of Detroit, has appointed Talitha Johnson as its new communications director. Johnson will oversee communications, branding, and media relations for DESC's major workforce initiatives,
including the Detroit at Work system and Grow Detroit’s Young Talent. Johnson joined DESC in mid-November, transitioning from her previous role as director of communications at the Downtown Detroit Partnership. Dana Williams, President of DESC, expressed enthusiasm about Johnson's appointment, highlighting her extensive experience and the value she brings to the organization and the community. DESC has been managing the Detroit at Work system since 2017 and the citywide summer youth jobs program, Grow Detroit’s Young Talent, since 2015. The agency serves as a centralized hub for workforce development resources, offering career center networks, recruitment services, training programs, and strategic partnerships.
Why It's Important?
Talitha Johnson's appointment as communications director is significant for DESC as it aims to strengthen its outreach and impact on Detroit's workforce development. Effective communication is crucial for connecting Detroit residents with job opportunities and training programs. Johnson's background in strategic communications and media relations is expected to enhance DESC's visibility and engagement with employers and job seekers. This role is vital for expanding DESC's reach, ensuring more Detroiters are aware of upskilling opportunities and high-quality jobs, and fostering partnerships with companies that drive the region's economy. Johnson's leadership is anticipated to elevate employer-led strategies and improve the narrative around workforce pathways available to residents.
What's Next?
With Talitha Johnson at the helm of communications, DESC is likely to focus on expanding its outreach efforts and strengthening partnerships with local businesses and community organizations. Johnson's experience in promoting major events and initiatives will be instrumental in raising awareness about DESC's programs and resources. The agency may also look to leverage Johnson's expertise to enhance its digital presence and engage with a broader audience through social media and other communication channels. As DESC continues to implement the vision of the Mayor of Detroit’s Workforce Development Board, Johnson's role will be critical in ensuring that the agency's initiatives align with the city's economic and workforce development goals.
