President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has approved a significant restructuring of the Nigerian Army, expanding its structure from eight to twelve divisions. This move is aimed at enhancing the country's security architecture and improving the operational effectiveness
of the army. The expansion includes the creation of new divisions in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City, strategically positioned to improve command and control, decentralize operational decision-making, and strengthen border security. The restructuring is part of a broader effort by the administration to address Nigeria's evolving security challenges, which also includes the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel and the acquisition of critical military platforms and equipment.

What's Next?
The implementation of the new force structure will occur in two phases. The first phase, which includes the establishment of the 5, 9, and 10 Divisions and the reorganization of existing formations, is set to be completed by September 2026. The second phase, involving the establishment of the 83 Division and further reorganization, is expected to be completed by December 2026. This phased approach will allow for a systematic enhancement of the army's capabilities, ensuring that the new divisions are fully operational and integrated into the national defense strategy.
