chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine in the University of Missouri School of Medicine, involved changing the night shift schedule from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to an earlier 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. The findings, announced on August 17, indicated that this two-hour shift allowed physicians to align their rest more closely with their natural circadian rhythm. Participants reported more restorative sleep and experienced a decline in white blood cell and platelet counts, which are indicators of inflammation. This research builds on previous studies linking circadian rhythm disruption to increased risks of heart disease, diabetes, and burnout among night-shift workers.
