What's Happening?
Imogene Nuss '28, a John S. Toll Research Fellow at Washington College, spent the summer researching the mathematical foundations of quilting to prepare for Professor Emerald Andrews's 'Math of Quilting' course. This interdisciplinary course is designed
for non-math majors to fulfill natural science and quantitative skills requirements by learning math skills through the practical application of quilting. Nuss's primary task was to develop a four-day lesson plan based on an academic article titled 'A Mathematical Foundation for Foundation Paper Pieceable Quilts' from the journal ACM Transactions on Graphics. This involved delving into complex mathematical concepts such as graph theory, including directed, undirected, tree, and hyper graphs, to understand how they apply to the precise patterns and construction of paper pieceable quilts. The goal is to make these advanced mathematical theories accessible to students without a traditional math background, demonstrating the real-world relevance of mathematics in an unexpected field.
