What's Happening?
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Sustainable Fiscal Policy and Public Finance Intern for its Industry and Economy Division (IED) in Geneva, Switzerland. This internship, lasting six months, is open to candidates fluent in English.
The IED plays a crucial role in UNEP's Green Economy Initiative, which aims to transition national economies towards sustainable practices by fostering investment in green sectors and promoting sustainable consumption. The Finance and Economics Branch within this division focuses on the interplay between economics, trade, finance, and the environment to advance sustainable development at various levels. The Economic and Fiscal Policy Unit (EFPU) specifically supports global efforts in green fiscal policy reforms, advising countries on how fiscal policies can contribute to an inclusive green economy and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses, as the United Nations does not provide financial remuneration for internships.
Why It's Important?
This internship highlights UNEP's ongoing commitment to integrating environmental considerations into economic and fiscal policies, a critical step for global sustainable development. By focusing on green fiscal policy reforms, UNEP aims to influence national economic strategies to be more environmentally conscious and socially inclusive. The initiative to shift national economies towards a sustainable trajectory through increased investment in green sectors and a change in consumer preferences has significant implications for global markets and industries. It underscores a growing recognition that economic growth must be decoupled from environmental degradation. The work of the Finance and Economics Branch, particularly the EFPU, is vital in providing analytical studies and advice to countries, fostering partnerships with various stakeholders to support the transition to an inclusive green economy. This effort is crucial for addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and other environmental challenges through economic levers.
What's Next?
The internship position is open for applications until September 6, 2026, with the selected intern expected to commence a six-month term. The intern will contribute to UNEP's broader efforts in promoting sustainable fiscal policies and public finance, which will continue to involve collaboration with UN agencies, intergovernmental institutions, governments, academic bodies, businesses, and civil society organizations. The insights and support provided by the intern will aid the EFPU in its advisory role to countries, helping them align their fiscal policies with sustainable development objectives. This ongoing work is part of a larger, long-term strategy by UNEP to advocate for and facilitate the global transition to a green economy, with continuous efforts to review and adapt environmental policies to emerging global issues.
Beyond the Headlines
The emphasis on sustainable fiscal policy and public finance by UNEP reflects a deeper global shift towards recognizing the intrinsic link between economic stability and environmental health. This initiative moves beyond traditional environmental protection by embedding ecological considerations directly into the financial frameworks that govern national economies. It suggests a future where economic success is not solely measured by GDP but also by environmental sustainability and social equity. The focus on an 'inclusive green economy' implies a commitment to ensuring that the transition benefits all segments of society, preventing the exacerbation of inequalities that can arise from economic restructuring. This approach could lead to innovative financial instruments, green bonds, and carbon pricing mechanisms becoming more mainstream, fundamentally altering how governments and businesses operate and invest.
