What's Happening?
The Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) has initiated a survey to gather public opinion on the impact of fireworks on pets and wildlife. The survey aims to understand whether residents would prefer a ban on fireworks or maintain
the current regulations. It specifically targets pet owners to determine if their animals have suffered due to fireworks in 2025 and if wildlife has been affected. Additionally, the survey seeks to identify if individuals or their acquaintances have experienced conditions like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of fireworks. The survey is anonymous and comes as islanders prepare for New Year's Eve celebrations. GSPCA manager Steve Byrne emphasized the distress fireworks can cause to animals, urging pet owners to take precautions. The survey also includes questions about the use of drones in public fireworks displays, following a successful Liberation Day event that featured them.
Why It's Important?
The survey by the GSPCA is significant as it addresses the ongoing debate about the use of fireworks and their impact on animals and people. Fireworks, while a source of celebration for many, can cause fear and anxiety in pets and wildlife, leading to potential harm. Understanding public sentiment through this survey could influence future regulations on fireworks in Guernsey, potentially leading to stricter controls or alternative celebration methods, such as drone displays. This initiative highlights the growing awareness and consideration for animal welfare and mental health issues related to loud noises and unexpected events. The results could also inform similar discussions in other regions, contributing to broader changes in how public celebrations are conducted.
What's Next?
Following the survey, the GSPCA plans to analyze the responses to advocate for changes that better protect animals and individuals affected by fireworks. Depending on the survey results, there could be proposals for new regulations or guidelines regarding fireworks usage in Guernsey. The GSPCA may also increase efforts to educate the public on how to mitigate the impact of fireworks on pets, such as creating safe spaces and using calming aids. The organization might collaborate with local authorities to explore alternative celebration methods, like drone displays, which could reduce the negative impact on animals and people with sensitivities to loud noises.
