Chapman University has initiated the Or Initiative, a program aimed at improving civil discourse skills among students in the digital age. The initiative, led by Vikki Katz, focuses on equipping students with the ability to engage in evidence-based discussions
on polarizing issues. The program was established in response to the challenges students face in navigating social media as a primary news source, where algorithms often create echo chambers. The initiative is supported by a $1.85 million grant from the Samueli Foundation and involves curriculum development and interviews with students in Southern California and New York City. The program's first curricular focus is on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and it aims to provide long-term tools for teachers to facilitate discussions on various political topics.

Additionally, the initiative will launch a fellowship program, providing up to $50,000 to four Civil Discourse Accelerator Fellows to develop digital and AI-driven technologies that support the program's goals. These efforts aim to create a research-based protocol for facilitating civil discourse in educational settings, with the potential to expand the program's reach and impact.
