What's Happening?
Melbourne Airport is inviting community feedback on a draft Noise Sharing Plan, which aims to manage aircraft noise distribution when the new north-south runway becomes operational in 2031. The plan, a condition of the Federal Government's approval, seeks to provide communities with periods of respite from aircraft noise by exploring different runway operating modes. Independent consultants are leading the development of the plan, which includes input from communities already affected by noise and those that may experience changes in flight paths. The engagement process will begin in October 2025, with opportunities for online and face-to-face participation.
Why It's Important?
The Noise Sharing Plan is crucial for balancing airport expansion with community well-being, as aircraft noise can significantly impact quality of life. The plan's development reflects a commitment to responsible growth and community engagement, ensuring that the airport's expansion supports economic development while addressing environmental and social concerns. The feedback process allows stakeholders to influence how noise is managed, potentially leading to more equitable solutions and improved community relations.
What's Next?
Community members will have the opportunity to review the draft plan in mid to late 2026 before it is finalized and submitted for government approval in early 2027. The engagement process will provide valuable insights into community preferences and concerns, shaping the final plan and its implementation.
