Gary high school students participated in a virtual reality (VR) training session designed to simulate real-life scenarios faced by police officers. This initiative, held at the Gary Area Career Center, involved students enrolled in a criminal justice
class and was conducted in collaboration with the Gary Police Department. The VR equipment, manufactured by VirTra, was acquired using federal Perkins V funds, which are designated for career and technical education programs. The training aimed to provide students with practical experience in de-escalation tactics, a critical skill for those considering careers in law enforcement. The VR setup included a V-180 monitor and allowed participants to engage in various scenarios, such as traffic stops and mass shooting responses, using prop weapons. The program emphasized the importance of respect and proper decision-making in high-pressure situations.
