What's Happening?
The $238 million upgrade of the 5600 South and I-15 interchange in Roy, Utah, is largely complete after approximately three years of construction. This project involved expanding the two-mile section of 5600 South between I-15 and 3500 West to two lanes
in each direction with a center turn lane, an increase from the previous single lane with a turn lane. The I-15 interchange itself was reconfigured to better manage increased traffic volumes. Roy City Manager Matt Andrews stated that the additional lanes and new interchange are expected to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and provide safer, more efficient access to I-15 and Hill Air Force Base. A celebration to mark this milestone is scheduled for Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at Roy Elementary School. This project is one of several major road initiatives in northern Utah, with others including a new I-15 intersection at 1800 North near Sunset and Clinton, and the northward extension of the West Davis Corridor.
Why It's Important?
This infrastructure upgrade is crucial for accommodating the significant population and economic growth in western Weber County and the surrounding northern Davis County. The area west of Roy has experienced a surge in traffic, particularly during peak commute times, due to continued residential development. Furthermore, the expansion of the Northrop Grumman complex, which is central to the Sentinel missile defense project and employs over 5,000 people, has increased the need for improved transportation infrastructure. The enhanced access to Hill Air Force Base is also vital for military operations and personnel. UDOT acquired approximately 60 parcels of land, primarily single-family homes, to facilitate this expansion.
