The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit organization, has analyzed nearly 50 peer-reviewed studies on household methods for removing agricultural chemicals from fruits and vegetables. Their findings, published in the scientific journal Frontiers
in Environmental Health, indicate that rinsing produce under tap water or soaking it can significantly reduce pesticide residues. Even more effective methods involve soaking fruits and vegetables in solutions containing baking soda or vinegar. Dayna de Montagnac, a scientist at the EWG and lead author of the paper, emphasizes that while not all methods are feasible for everyone, even a simple rinse or tap water soak helps reduce residues. The studies primarily focused on insecticides and fungicides, with less research available on herbicide residues. The EWG also compiles lists of the most and least contaminated produce, based on data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and collard greens, along with strawberries, grapes, and peaches, are frequently found on the most-contaminated list, while sweet corn and onions are among the least contaminated.
