What's Happening?
The Trisha Brown Dance Company (TBDC) has partnered with the Merce Cunningham Trust to present a dance tour titled 'Dancing with Bob: Rauschenberg, Brown and Cunningham Onstage.' This collaboration celebrates
the centennial of American artist Robert Rauschenberg. The tour features two iconic dance pieces: 'Set and Reset' choreographed by Trisha Brown in 1983, and 'Travelogue' choreographed by Merce Cunningham in 1977. Both pieces include set and costume designs by Rauschenberg. The tour commenced at the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC, and will continue with performances at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles from May 6-8, 2026. The project was initiated by Ken Tabachnick, former Executive Director of the Cunningham Trust, and is supported by TBDC's Executive Director Kirstin Kapustik.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration highlights the enduring influence of Robert Rauschenberg on contemporary dance and visual arts. By bringing together the works of Trisha Brown and Merce Cunningham, the tour not only honors Rauschenberg's legacy but also showcases the versatility and adaptability of modern dance. The project provides an opportunity for audiences to experience the unique styles of Brown and Cunningham, while also appreciating the artistic contributions of Rauschenberg. The tour is significant for the dance community as it revives historical works and introduces them to new audiences, potentially inspiring future collaborations and innovations in the field.
What's Next?
The tour is expected to continue beyond Los Angeles, with hopes of extending to a European tour. Additional events are planned, including performances by students at the Wexner Center and Iowa State University. The success of this project could lead to further collaborations between dance companies and visual artists, promoting a deeper integration of different art forms. The ongoing celebration of Rauschenberg's centennial may also inspire similar initiatives in other artistic disciplines.
Beyond the Headlines
The project underscores the importance of preserving and revitalizing historical dance works. By reconstructing original sets and costumes, the collaboration ensures that the artistic vision of Rauschenberg, Brown, and Cunningham is faithfully represented. This initiative also highlights the role of dance companies in maintaining cultural heritage and fostering artistic innovation. The project may encourage other institutions to explore similar partnerships, enhancing the cultural landscape and providing new opportunities for artists and audiences alike.
