MBDA and Safran Electronics & Defense have successfully conducted the first firing of the Thundart artillery rocket from the Île du Levant firing range. The test, which took place on April 14, 2026, was aimed at validating the rocket's design and propulsion
system. The Thundart, capable of reaching supersonic speeds and a range of 150 km, is powered by a propulsion system from MBDA's subsidiary, Roxel. This development comes as the French Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA) prepares to decide on replacing the French Army's Lance-Roquettes Unitaires (LRU) multiple rocket launchers, which will become obsolete by 2030. MBDA and Safran are pooling their expertise to accelerate the development of Thundart, with plans for the first systems to be operational by 2030.
