What's Happening?
The Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) is an international nonprofit organization focused on reducing road-crash deaths and injuries, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Established in 1999, GRSP was formed in response to the growing
recognition of road-traffic injuries as a significant global health and humanitarian crisis. The organization is hosted by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and operates from Geneva, Switzerland. GRSP collaborates with governments, civil society, businesses, and development agencies to strengthen road-safety laws, improve enforcement, and implement evidence-based interventions. The partnership prioritizes major road-safety risk factors such as speeding, drink-driving, and the use of motorcycle helmets and seat belts. GRSP's initiatives include the Road Safety Grants Programme, which supports projects designed to enhance road-safety policies and legislation.
Why It's Important?
The work of the Global Road Safety Partnership is crucial as road-traffic injuries are a leading cause of death, particularly among children and young adults aged 5-29. Approximately 1.19 million people die in road crashes each year, with 92% of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. By promoting evidence-based road-safety policies and improving the enforcement of traffic laws, GRSP aims to achieve a sustainable reduction in road-crash deaths and injuries. The organization's efforts contribute to the global goal of reducing road-traffic deaths and injuries, supporting the road-safety targets included in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. GRSP's initiatives not only save lives but also help build stronger institutions and foster long-term collaboration among various sectors.
What's Next?
GRSP continues to expand its initiatives, including the Road Safety Grants Programme, which has recently broadened its scope to include policy and regulatory reforms aligned with the Safe System approach. The organization is also focusing on strengthening road-policing capacity and developing leadership skills among road-safety professionals. GRSP's future activities will likely involve further collaboration with governments, businesses, and civil society to address road-safety challenges and implement effective interventions. The partnership's ongoing efforts are expected to contribute to significant improvements in road safety, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
