Daniella Rempe, an associate professor at The University of Texas at Austin, is developing an outdoor alarm system called RiseAlert to provide early warnings for flash floods. The system aims to give residents valuable extra time to evacuate during emergencies.
Unlike existing systems that detect water after it has entered a building, RiseAlert is designed to alert homeowners before water reaches their property. The device is simple, low-tech, and does not rely on Wi-Fi, making it reliable even during power outages. It consists of a water-level sensor connected to a loud alarm and a flashing warning light, and can be easily installed on a tree or fence post. The research team has filed a provisional patent and is testing prototypes, with the goal of making the device affordable and as common as smoke detectors in homes.
