What's Happening?
The Forest Preserve District of Will County is organizing two hiking events in the Naperville area to encourage outdoor activities during the winter season. The first event is scheduled for January 6 at Whalon Lake, offering a 1.6-mile loop walk. The second
event is a guided hike at Hidden Oaks Nature Center on January 11, focusing on winter birds and how to attract them to local yards. These events are part of the Trail Club series, which promotes fitness and community engagement. The hikes are free and open to all ages, with the guided hike requiring registration by January 10.
Why It's Important?
These hiking events provide an opportunity for community members to engage in physical activity and connect with nature during the winter months. By promoting outdoor activities, the Forest Preserve District aims to enhance community well-being and environmental awareness. The focus on winter birds also offers educational benefits, encouraging participants to learn about local wildlife and conservation efforts. Such initiatives can foster a sense of community and promote healthy lifestyles, contributing to the overall quality of life in the area.
What's Next?
Participants who attend three walks in the Trail Club series will earn a Trail Club sticker, incentivizing continued participation. The Forest Preserve District may continue to offer similar events throughout the winter, potentially expanding to other preserves. Community feedback and participation levels could influence future programming, with the possibility of introducing more educational components or themed hikes. The success of these events could lead to increased community involvement and support for local conservation efforts.
