What's Happening?
The North East of the UK is set to see an expansion of its child poverty initiative, following a £2.6 million funding boost from The National Lottery Community Fund. This program, led by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, aims to provide financial and benefits
advice directly within communities and schools. The funding will nearly double the number of families supported, from 2,240 to over 4,000. The initiative focuses on maximizing benefit entitlements, accessing cost of living grants, and improving financial resilience, with advisers positioned in schools and community settings to enhance accessibility.
Why It's Important?
This expansion is crucial in addressing child poverty in the North East, a region that has faced significant economic challenges. By increasing the reach of financial advice services, the program aims to stabilize family finances and reduce long-term reliance on public services. The initiative's success could serve as a model for other regions, highlighting the importance of integrated support systems and cross-sector collaboration in tackling systemic issues like poverty. The involvement of local authorities and Citizens Advice services ensures that the program is tailored to the specific needs of the community.
