A new coalition named Americans for Ingredient Transparency (AFIT) has been formed to advocate for a uniform national standard for ingredient transparency in consumer packaged goods. The coalition, supported
by major food, agricultural, and consumer products trade groups and companies, aims to address the growing public scrutiny over the contents of these products. AFIT is pursuing federal legislation to establish a single U.S. benchmark for ingredient transparency, applying consistent, science- and risk-based principles to ensure consumer confidence in the safety of foods, beverages, and personal care products. The coalition seeks to reform the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) process, implement front-of-package labeling, and utilize QR codes for immediate access to product information. AFIT also aims to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to designate the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as the sole regulatory authority for marketing and sales of these products.
