What's Happening?
The Government of Senegal, in collaboration with the World Bank Group, has launched the AgriConnect Senegal Compact, a strategic initiative aimed at transforming the country's agri-food systems and enhancing food security for millions of Senegalese. This
initiative aligns with Senegal's National Agenda for Transformation 2050 and the Food Sovereignty Strategy (SSA 2025-2034). It focuses on three priority value chains: grains, horticulture, and livestock, and is structured around making structural investments in agricultural infrastructure, revising sectoral policies, and encouraging private investment. The AgriConnect Compact aims to achieve over 90% food security nationally and create 800,000 formal jobs in the agricultural sector by 2029.
Why It's Important?
The AgriConnect Compact is significant as it represents a major step towards achieving food sovereignty and economic growth in Senegal. By focusing on structural investments and policy revisions, the initiative aims to create a more conducive environment for private investment, which is crucial for innovation and competitiveness in the agricultural sector. The expected increase in food security and job creation will directly improve the livelihoods of Senegalese families, stabilize farmer incomes, and provide employment opportunities for the youth. This initiative also highlights the importance of international cooperation, as it involves multiple global partners, including the World Bank, to support Senegal's transformation agenda.
What's Next?
The implementation of the AgriConnect Compact will involve a joint steering committee for planning, coordination, and monitoring, supported by a Technical Group of Partners. The initiative will focus on achieving tangible results in food security and job creation, with the World Bank Group playing a key role in catalyzing public and private investments. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other countries seeking to enhance their agricultural sectors and achieve food sovereignty.
