What's Happening?
FISH of Sanibel-Captiva is organizing a free self-defense class titled R.E.A.D.Y. (Respond with Empowerment & Awareness to Defend Yourself) on November 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will take place
at the Parish Hall of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Sanibel. The class is open to women and teens aged 13 and older, aiming to enhance their confidence, awareness, and practical safety skills. The session will be led by Chelsea Long, a Crime Prevention Practitioner from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Participants will engage in situational awareness exercises, crisis rehearsal, and learn basic self-defense techniques. This initiative is part of FISH's broader mission to support the local community by providing tools for everyday safety and resilience.
Why It's Important?
The self-defense class is significant as it empowers women and teens with essential skills to protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations. By fostering a sense of safety and confidence, the program contributes to the overall well-being and security of the community. It also highlights the importance of community organizations like FISH in providing valuable resources and support to local residents. The involvement of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office underscores the collaboration between law enforcement and community groups in promoting public safety and crime prevention.
What's Next?
Participants interested in attending the self-defense class must make reservations by November 18 at 5 p.m. FISH has expressed gratitude to Saint Michael for providing the venue and to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office for their collaboration. The organization encourages those interested to visit their website or contact their Senior Services Director for more information.
