A recent evidence map of systematic reviews, conducted through a computerized search of major medical databases from July 2018 to July 2024, has found limited high- or moderate-certainty evidence supporting the benefits of massage therapy for non-painful
adult health conditions. The study, which updated a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) report, identified 13 systematic reviews covering 8 non-painful conditions. Out of 190 full-text reviews, only 20 formally rated the certainty of evidence. The findings indicate that high-certainty evidence was limited to abdominal massage therapy for functional constipation. Moderate-certainty evidence was found for acupressure and auricular acupressure improving sleep quality in cancer patients, acupressure for sleep latency and fatigue in chronic kidney disease patients, and massage therapy reducing depressive symptoms in individuals with dementia. Most other conclusions were supported by low or very low certainty evidence.
