What's Happening?
Pace University has introduced a new student-run business called Pace Cleans, spearheaded by freshman business management student Nick Skjeveland. The service offers laundry, room cleaning, and car washes to students, faculty, and commuters. The initiative
was inspired by the common untidiness in student living spaces and the inconvenience of limited laundry facilities. Services are available on a one-time or subscription basis, with operations currently limited to specific days and times as part of a pilot program running from April 13 to May 13. The business aims to expand its hours and services based on the pilot's success. Customers must sign a waiver for liability and access, and the service is designed to be flexible and responsive to customer needs, including special instructions for allergies.
Why It's Important?
The launch of Pace Cleans represents a significant step in fostering entrepreneurship and practical business experience among students at Pace University. By addressing common student needs, the service not only enhances campus life but also provides a platform for students to gain real-world business management skills. The initiative could serve as a model for other universities looking to integrate student-run businesses into their campus ecosystems. Additionally, the service's focus on customer satisfaction and adaptability highlights a growing trend in personalized and convenient service offerings in the education sector.
What's Next?
Following the pilot phase, Pace Cleans plans to expand its operations to seven days a week with longer service hours. The business also aims to increase its staff by 10-15 students to improve service flexibility. Future plans include establishing an in-person location, collaborating with other student-run businesses, and marketing at university events. The service will be promoted during student orientation to attract subscriptions from incoming students and their parents. The team is also considering the possibility of accepting Flex Dollars as a payment option to make the service more accessible to the student body.
