What's Happening?
A report by the Air Accident Investigation Unit has concluded that a helicopter crash at Shannon Airport was caused by an unsecured portable power bank in the cockpit. The incident occurred on September 15, 2022, when the Eurocopter EC 155 B helicopter lost
control during landing, impacting the taxiway with significant force. The pilot, the sole occupant, was able to steer the helicopter away from cargo trailers and ground personnel, avoiding injuries. The investigation revealed that the power bank restricted the collective pitch lever's movement, leading to the crash.
Why It's Important?
This incident highlights the critical importance of securing all items within aircraft cockpits to prevent accidents. The findings may lead to increased scrutiny and safety measures in aviation protocols, particularly concerning the storage and securing of personal electronic devices. The recommendations from the investigation could influence airport authorities to enhance infrastructure for helicopter operations, potentially reducing similar risks in the future.
