Boston Public Schools (BPS) have proposed a new policy aimed at regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within its educational system. This policy, presented to the School Committee, focuses on ensuring that AI serves educational values rather
than defining them. BPS Chief Technology Officer Lisa Irey emphasized the importance of protecting student privacy and promoting critical thinking skills. The policy builds on previous guidance and feedback from over 500 stakeholders, including staff, students, and families. It includes guidelines for AI use, student safety protocols, and academic integrity expectations. The policy prohibits the use of AI for grading, discipline, or academic evaluation without human oversight and bans the use of AI to create harmful or inappropriate content. The initiative follows Mayor Michelle Wu's announcement to integrate AI fluency into the high school curriculum. The School Committee is expected to vote on the policy in June.
