What's Happening?
Pace, a suburban bus service in Illinois, is advancing its transition to an all-electric fleet with the completion of a new charging facility at its North Division garage in Waukegan. This development marks the end of the first phase of their project,
which includes the installation of a 10-stall electric bus charging station equipped with solar panels. The facility is set to support a fleet of battery-electric buses, with the first 10 to 12 buses expected to operate by early 2026. This initiative is part of Pace's broader plan to convert its entire fleet to electric by 2040. The project has received significant financial backing, including $1.92 million from the Community-Based Funding program and a $27 million grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
Why It's Important?
The transition to electric buses is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality in the region. By investing in electric infrastructure, Pace is not only modernizing its fleet but also contributing to environmental sustainability. This move is expected to provide cleaner air and quieter streets, benefiting the community and enhancing the reliability of public transit. The project also positions Waukegan as a leader in clean public transportation, potentially setting a precedent for other regions. The financial support from federal and state programs underscores the importance of sustainable transit solutions in public policy.
What's Next?
Pace plans to continue its transition to an all-electric fleet over the next 15 years, with ongoing efforts to secure additional funding through grants. The next phase involves renovating the interior of the North Division garage for electric vehicle maintenance, expected to be completed by 2027. As the project progresses, Pace will likely expand its electric bus operations to other areas, further reducing emissions and enhancing public transit infrastructure. The success of this pilot program in Lake County could influence similar initiatives in other regions, promoting broader adoption of electric public transportation.
