What's Happening?
Wizards of the Coast has announced a new Secret Lair drop for Magic: The Gathering, titled 'Secret Lair x Play-Doh: Squishful Thinking.' This special edition features reprinted cards with artwork created from real-life Play-Doh sculptures. The drop includes four cards: Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer, Polyraptor, Academy Manufactor, and Wurmcoil Engine. This initiative is part of a fundraising effort for Extra Life, a charity supporting Children's Miracle Network hospitals. Half of the proceeds from the sales will benefit Extra Life and Seattle Children's Hospital. The drop will be available from September 29 to November 9, with prices set at $40 for non-foil and $50 for rainbow foil versions. Additionally, limited quantities will be available at MagicCon: Atlanta from September 26-28.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights the ongoing commitment of Wizards of the Coast to support charitable causes through creative collaborations. By incorporating Play-Doh art, the company not only appeals to collectors and fans of Magic: The Gathering but also engages a broader audience interested in unique art forms. The collaboration with Extra Life underscores the importance of corporate social responsibility in the gaming industry, providing financial support to healthcare facilities and enhancing community engagement. This drop could potentially increase awareness and funds for children's hospitals, benefiting patients and their families.
What's Next?
Following this release, Wizards of the Coast is also planning a new superdrop themed around Marvel's Spider-Man, set to begin on September 22. This upcoming drop will feature six sets of five cards each, showcasing reprinted cards with Spider-Man-themed artwork. The continued release of themed drops suggests a strategy to maintain engagement with the Magic: The Gathering community while supporting various causes.
