A recent study by the Fiscal Alliance Foundation indicates that New England's efforts to transition to green energy have led to increased electricity costs and a persistent reliance on natural gas. Despite billions of dollars invested in zero-carbon energy programs
over the past 25 years, the region's dependence on fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, for electricity generation has slightly increased from 54.6% in 2000 to 55.4%. The report, titled 'New England’s Energy Transition: Colliding With Reality,' analyzes data from ISO-New England, the independent nonprofit managing the region's power grid. While coal and oil have been largely phased out, natural gas has become the dominant fossil fuel, with its output surpassing the combined output of all fossil fuels in 2000. The study highlights a significant mismatch: the existing energy system heavily depends on natural gas, yet new development projects have almost entirely shifted away from it, focusing instead on solar, wind, and battery storage.
