What's Happening?
The Victoria Harbour Authority has announced significant developments for 2025, including the ability to dock two large ships simultaneously at Pier B. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to support
sustainable growth while maintaining the character and history of the waterfront. The harbour authority, a non-profit organization, manages a deep-water marina and various upland holdings across Victoria's harbours. In 2025, the authority hosted over 30 events, ranging from food festivals to marine-themed gatherings, and welcomed 310 vessels, nearly a million passengers, and over 378,000 crew members. The harbour's versatility was showcased in November when it hosted a variety of vessels, including Canada's largest spill-response vessel and a cargo freighter. The authority is also planning for future growth, with expectations of over 320 cruise ship calls and nearly a million passengers in 2026.
Why It's Important?
The developments at Victoria Harbour are crucial for maintaining its status as Canada's busiest cruise port of call. By enhancing its docking capabilities and hosting a diverse range of events, the harbour authority is positioning Victoria as a key destination for both cruise passengers and other maritime activities. This growth supports local businesses and tourism, contributing significantly to the regional economy. The harbour's ability to attract a variety of vessels and host large-scale events also highlights its importance as a cultural and economic hub. The planned increase in cruise ship calls and the introduction of new routes, such as the Great Bear Rainforest cruise, are expected to boost international interest and tourism in the area.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, the Victoria Harbour Authority is embarking on a 10-month integrated planning initiative to develop a long-term vision for the harbour lands and waters. This initiative aims to explore opportunities for supporting a thriving working harbour that balances marine industries with commerce, recreation, and tourism. The authority anticipates welcoming new cruise lines, such as Virgin Voyages and MSC Cruises, in 2026, with several inaugural calls expected. These developments are likely to enhance Victoria's appeal as a premier cruise destination and support continued economic growth in the region.
