Hudson County officials are set to begin construction this week on a major redesign of a dangerous stretch of John F. Kennedy (JFK) Boulevard in Jersey City's Journal Square neighborhood. The project, which has been in development since 2014, will focus
on the segment between Sip and Pavonia avenues, and also include a portion of Bergen Avenue. This area is characterized by up to seven lanes of traffic and high pedestrian and cyclist activity, particularly due to its proximity to the PATH train’s Journal Square station. A state Department of Transportation analysis revealed 154 crashes in the project area between 2022 and 2024, with over two-thirds involving distracted drivers and about 14% involving pedestrians or cyclists. The redesign will install new and update existing curbs, sidewalks, and traffic signals, improve crosswalk visibility and accessibility, and enhance street lighting. The project is expected to cost $6.8 million, funded by the Federal Highway Administration, and will take 18 months to complete.
