What's Happening?
Mathew Kelly, a professor of art at Central College, has been installed as the 12th Kenneth J. Weller Distinguished Professor of the Liberal Arts. This three-year endowed professorship, named after Central College's 18th president, recognizes a distinguished
faculty member and provides support for teaching. Kelly, who began teaching at Central in 2006, earned tenure and promotion to associate professor in 2012, and was promoted to professor of art in 2022. During the installation ceremony, Kelly presented his process and creative vision for his graphic novel, 'Paracusia.' This project was developed during a semester-long sabbatical where Kelly wrote, revised, and began illustrating the work. The story of 'Paracusia' follows a master thief grappling with his guilty conscience, seeking to uncover who will betray him, only to encounter a child who inadvertently reveals both his greatest fear and his ultimate strength. Kelly shared key creative insights during his presentation, emphasizing the importance of quieting internal chatter, recognizing that inspiration isn't always immediate, seeking awe, quieting fear, moving beyond regrets, and remaining present.
